Armed Forces Day – May 19th 2012

Armed Forces Day #001

Armed Forces Day #001

Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949. The holiday was supported and approved by President Harry S. Truman who wanted to show that America’s military was ready for any threat or challenge. One of the purposes of the holiday was to combine the separate holidays celebrated by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. It was requested that each of these organizations should drop the dates of their individual celebrations to accept the date of Armed Forces Day observance on the third Saturday of May.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force complied with the Armed Forces Day change, and are recognized together on Armed Forces Day. The Marines and the Coast Guard, however, retained their individual dates of establishment, but also agreed to observe Armed Forces Day as an additional celebration. The end result was that each segment of the military did join Armed Forces Day for observance, but the Marines and Coast Guard also retained their original celebrations.

Armed Forces Day was implemented to achieve several objectives: to unite all segments of the military under the Department of Defense, to expand public understanding of the military and its purpose in war and peace, to present a showing of the latest equipment and technologies that protect the public, to demonstrate that the military is ready for any threat or challenge, and finally to honor all of the people who serve in each segment of the military. The intentions and goals of the holiday have been honorable from its inception, but Armed Forces Day has missed some public acclaim because its purpose has been poorly understood.

The novelty of the first Armed Forces Day brought it much attention and grandeur. It was celebrated with parades, air shows, and military interaction. It appeared that the intent of the holiday was being fulfilled. In time, however, the holiday drifted somewhat into obscurity in many parts of the nation. Some of the public became confused about the purpose of Armed Forces Day. Combining the celebrations of each segment of the military into one holiday, effectively camouflaged the reason to celebrate the day. It was almost like combining Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. The celebrations all have something in common, but when you put them together, they lose something in the translation. It is easy to understand that “Army Day” celebrates the Army and so forth, but the creation of Armed Forces Day made the reason for the celebration more obscure. With Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day added to the equation, many find it difficult to understand the reason that each military holiday is celebrated.

In fairness, there may still be hope for Armed Forces Day to achieve the greatness it was created to achieve. It appears that much of the confusion about the holiday stems from a lack of promotional instruction and publicity about the holiday. Perhaps a little clarification of the purpose of each military holiday may help to increase the level of public appreciation for Armed Forces Day.

Job Interview Pic

Landing That Job Interview

During these hard times, we need to sharpen our skills on many levels. One of them may be to take this time to prepare to get a better job. In doing so, you will need the top 10 TATF approved tips to get the job you deserve.

This information was submitted to us from another member. These tips can help you out when you are going for more money, and get yourself a better job.

  1. Prepare meaningful discussion points. Know “the stories of your life.” You may not have a lot of business experience to draw upon, but you’ve certainly experienced things in your life, like encountering rude customers while working part time, or working with others as part of a school team or club. Think of positive, specific examples ahead of time that demonstrate your competency, and use them when you answer questions.
  2. Practice interviewing with a friend or family member. You will learn where you stumble or whether you use “like” or “um.”  Be open to the feedback and criticism. Anticipate the tough questions and know how you will answer them. This also applies to interviewing by Skype. Make sure you know how to use the equipment and choose an appropriate setting with a non-distracting background.
  3. Do your research. Visit the company’s website and become a fan on their Facebook page. Talk to people who work there. Your LinkedIn contacts may help you identity people that work or have worked at the company. You better know who is in charge and who the executives are for their company. Try to read and follow their press briefings, and major news that has came up in recent years.
  4.  Buy a business suit. At least look the part. When interviewing for most jobs in corporate America, it’s usually best to wear a suit—even if the company has a business casual dress policy. Sometimes you will be told what to wear and you should follow those guidelines. Make sure your clothes are clean, pressed, fit, polished, and shining.
  5. Adapt to the work environment. Though for some, college is a time to celebrate your uniqueness with pink hair, tattoos, or body piercings, it’s usually best to keep that side of yourself private for the interview. Turn your cell phone off and no gum chewing.
  6. Shake hands — twice. Believe it or not, one of the simplest things you can do to convey a sense of confidence and professionalism is to shake hands properly at the beginning of the interview and at the end. Make your hand shake a firm but not too hard of a hand shake.
  7. Be enthusiastic. Many candidates have good job skills, but they seem passive during the interview. You need to be engaging. Don’t slouch, avoid nervous gestures like hair twirling, look the interviewer in the eye, and smile during the interview. Answer the questions clearly and concisely.
  8. Have questions to ask. You will usually be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. Prepare a couple of questions ahead of time and ask them. It shows your interest in the position.
  9. Send thank-you notes. Write to each of the people who interviewed you. An emailed thank- you note is acceptable in most situations.
  10. Learn from each interview. What went right? What can you improve upon? Review the questions you were asked. How did you answer them? How will you answer them in the future?

Without a doubt you will be well on your way to landing that job you have always wanted.

Thanks for reading,

Gaining Inspiration To Keep Going

When you are trying to develop a business or a concept of something new, it is sometimes hard to keep your focus on the big picture of things. Every once in a while you will need to be inspired by something, in order to jump back into the ring with more creative energy. This could be almost anything from a picture to a actual movie. You just never know what will pop up that will get your mind running with ideas.

One of the ways I get inspired for creative ideas is through movies. I use several different movies for different purposes. The movie makers spend millions of dollars to inspire, or entertain you. I have stumbled on a website that had an interesting list of movies that could inspire you to keep your mind racing with creative ideas and thoughts that could potentially pay off in the end for you.

Here is a list of old and new movies that I too think every entrepreneur should see:

1) Up in the Air (2009)

– This is a story about Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) who travels around the country with his job of laying off people in other companies. A young, fresh employee Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) comes in to the company to revolutionize the current business model and rely solely on technology.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  Ideas for efficiency are great, but sometimes you need to understand the entire process before looking for ways to improve existing systems.

[RELATED: 4 Ways to Encourage Innovation from Within]

 2) October Sky (1999)

– A young boy, Homer Hickman (Jake Gyllenhaal), and his friends become inspired by Sputnik’s orbit that he decides to learn how to build rockets. Most of the town and all believe this is a waste of time since the boys were destined to be coalminers. But one teacher Miss Riley (Laura Dern) encourages this dream and enters the boys into a National Science Fair with the prize being a college scholarship.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  It’s an inspiring story about changing your path in life to chase after your dreams. Something many entrepreneurs know very well.

 3) Moneyball (2011)

– Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) has the lowest salary available for players in Baseball. All of his star players are being picked up by bigger teams and he’s left to look at how to create a winning team without the competitive edge that money can buy. The solution is to look at statistical data and pick players based on their stats alone to fill in gaps needed on his team.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  Bootstrapping is something many small business owners are accustomed to doing. This movie shows how taking an innovative approach to an existing way of doing business when you have little to no money can beat the competition.

[RELATED: Starting a Business When You’re Broke]

 4) The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

– Christopher Gardner (Will Smith) is trying to support his family by selling medical devices that no one wants. He sees a chance to fight for an internship selling stocks, but its 6 months of no pay. To make ends meet, he continues to push the medical devices and becomes homeless. But he continues down the path to obtain the career he’s after.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  This movie shows how one man overcame obstacles and worked smarter and harder than the competition. He never lost sight of the end goal and did everything he could to realize his dreams.

[RELATED: 5 Ways to Study the Competition]

5) The Social Network (2010)

– Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), creates Facebook in his dorm room. He is later sued by classmates who claim he stole their idea and a co-founder who was squeezed out by rapid moving company.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  There’s no denying the impact Facebook has on everyday life. This is a great story about taking the idea and turning it into one of the most profitable businesses.

[RELATED: Small Business Guide to Facebook]

 6) Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

- A story of a high pressure sales environment. When a new boss comes in, the veteran sales reps have to close more deals or lose their job. One of the most famous lines from the movie “A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing” shares the salesman mantra for succeeding and closing deals.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  Entrepreneurs are sales people. They have to sell their vision, product, company and purpose in everything they do. And usually closing the sale is the most difficult part, but it should always be pursued.

[RELATED: Seal the Deal: How to Close the Sale]

 7) Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)

– A biographical look at the men who created Microsoft and Apple. It focuses on the early days of both companies and how they differed in their operations.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have long been considered inspirational for many entrepreneurs. This movie shows their struggles, successes and how they became the founding fathers of the tech world.

[RELATED: Entrepreneurs Lose the Icon of Our Generation]

 8) Rocky (1976)

– A true underdog story of a Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) who is given the chance to fight the Heavyweight Champ. He has a chance to make a better life for himself by going head to head with the competition and winning.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  Most mom-and-pop shops are the underdogs compared their Big-Box competition. However, both can be competitive and succeed in today’s marketplace.

[RELATED: 4 Ways to Compete with a Big-Box Neighbor]

 9) Tommy Boy (1995)

– A family business is on the brinks of going under when the owner passes away. His slow-witted and clumsy son, Tommy (Chris Farley) is left to try to save the company by going out on the road to close sales and keep the company afloat.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  This is a hysterical movie but one lesson entrepreneurs should take away is to have a proper succession plan in place.

[RELATED: 6 Steps for Family Business Succession]

10) Flash of Genius (2008)

- An inventor, Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), battles with the US automakers over his device. All the auto giants embrace his invention and it becomes a standard on all cars. However, they do not give Kearns the credit he is due and he fights them for credit.

Why entrepreneurs should see it:  It’s important to protect your ideas from being stolen by corporate giants or the competition.

Emergency Black Team Debriefing from Wednesday Night

Black Team

Black Team

First of all I would like to thank the two dedicated Members from The So Cal Chapter that showed up and provided a neighborhood watch for Cruzzer, her family, and her neighborhood. They were able to sleep throughout the night knowing they were protected.

“Sledgehammer” was able to stay the entire night with me, and “Clutch” came by for two hours to provide a nice two hour nap for “Sledgehammer”. This was a very short notice, but we were able to at least provide a good overnight security detail for our members’ family and the area.

The idea of The Emergency Black Team Response came to us back in 2000. We were having members who were getting into some tough situations while simply just driving on the streets, or during our training operations we had. Several of these situations were Road Rage incidents, and/or suspicious interactions on the road. We also had some members that had incidents take place at their residence. We then took a vote to see if the Team would want to start an emergency response group of its members, to assist other members based on members’ days off. That is when The Black Team was formed.

So we then took a schedule and had all members fill out any possible hours that they would be free from their personal obligations in life. These hours would be hours that they really didn’t need to be doing anything, or were not working, but could be available for a possible Emergency Assistance call out. We ended up with about 6 – 7 Members free to assist for anytime, and every day of the week, IF another member requested an EMERGENCY call for assistance. This was a comforting feeling knowing that there was your own private SWAT team ready to go for any emergency you may need.

We then adopted a “Black Team Uniform” of black propper BDU’s and ALL BLACK gear. We then had weekly training operations with our vehicles, and with whoever was on call that night. We learned how to track and follow other vehicles and people, we played vehicle hide and seek, and learned defensive, tactical, and offensive driving techniques. These were very valuable skills that we eventually mastered. Our Black Team became a very qualified and skilled group of people. We started to conduct neighborhood watches for members who lived in high crime areas. We gained a lot of respect from the Police Departments all over So Cal.

Just like on Wednesday when “Sledgehammer” and finished our briefing and security home walk thrus with the neighbors, we walked over to the Police Command Center, and informed them that T.A.T.F. was in the neighborhood, and would be conducting a overnight neighborhood watch for its Member, and concerned citizens in that area. The Police Officers said that was GREAT! They asked if we would be packing guns, and said they didn’t care what ever we wanted to bring. He said it was wonderful to have a group out and watching over the streets at night. We did just that.

The Police in general really don’t care if we are out here doing our missions. They think it is great that we provide such a service for its people. We need to understand that Team Alpha Task Force is not just an Airsoft Team; we are a REAL Emergency Response Team. We were patrolling every alleyway, street, and intersection just as much as the Police were. In fact the Police Day Shift stated they would be setup out on the block all night. The night shift came in and packed it up at 10:50pm! WOW they instead loaded the neighborhood with at least 7 Marked Police Cars, and 3 undercover Chargers and us. We were DEEP. But when the graveyard shift came in at 2:30am, they only had one police car drive down the street, and took off only spending about 15 seconds on the block! That just goes to show you that there is a real need for a team like us for these helpless citizens.

Overall we did a good job of watching over the area. I could have not done this without “Sledgehammer” and “Clutch” there. Thanks Guys!

I will talk more about bringing back this great Emergency Black Team Response in our next meeting. I got a lot of good feedback from not only our Members, but neighbors, friends and family. I would like for all of our members to voice your thoughts on having an Emergency Black Team there for your protection when you need it. How do you feel about it? :)

Thanks for reading,

Team Bug-Out-Bag Hike 01-11-12

01-13-12 @ 11:44 am @ TATF HQ – Los Angeles CA

Mission Debriefing – “Bug-Out-Bag Hike @ Anaheim Hills Trails”

This was a great hike. “Biggs”, “Cruzzer”, and a new Prepper “Rosemead” came out and hiked the trail with us. The object was to form a bigger group to go over all emergency equipment that you may have and see if you have everything you may need. We wanted to pitch our tents, and ensure we all know how and know what problems we may have. Also to see if you can go up and down these huge trails, with over 60 pounds on your back.

We walked about 3 miles, and had gone up and down at least 5 major hills. This was so much fun, and was surprised to not be as sore as I thought I would have been. We took video from three cameras (including the GoPro :) ), and took stills from two cameras. I will upload some pictures to show you all.

We will do another “Bug-Out-Bag Hike @ Anaheim Hills Trails” in a couple of months, so I hope others will want to join up with us, and have a fun afternoon. Tell me what you think about the pics.

Bug Out Bag For Woman Part 1

12-19-11 @ 18:20 pm @ TATF HQ – Los Angeles CA

Bug Out Bag For Women Part 1 Video

Hey Preppers, This is Cruzzer777′s first article here on our website TeamAlphaTaskForce.com I will talk about my very first video. This is my very first attempt at a video on You Tube. Originally I wanted to create a prepping channel for women since after doing some research, I noticed there were hardly any women Preppers.  But I found that women and men both enjoyed my channel and were compelled to watch.

Let me first start by saying this is a video for anyone who is beginning to prep.  I had become interested in emergency preparedness and thought it was a good time to start.  So, I began to look around for some items that I already had to start prepping.

At the time I was training for a marathon so I packed some sports enhancers like Gue, Protein Bars, etc.  which became very useful.  This bag eventually became my sports and training bag which I always leave in my car and use for training purposes.  But for now it would have to do for a bug out bag.

My very first items I talk about are my keys which are kept on a hook. The purpose of this is to keep my house keys and cars keys separate at all times. In the event of a carjacking, I can get out of the car without giving the crook my keys to my home.  This technique was taught to me by General Biggs, who encouraged me to start prepping and make my first video.

Instead of listing everything I put in this bug out bag I would like to encourage you to find items around the house to begin your Bug Out Bag AKA Emergency Preparedness Bag. It’s very easy to start.  I will list some household items you may have around the house that would be perfect for your bug out bag.

#001  First Aid Kit (small)
#002  Sewing Kit (small)
#003  Pens / Pencils

Thank you for watching and reading.  Tell us what you think of my first article and your thoughts on my video as well. I hope this was somewhat helpful to other women that do not already have a Bug Out Bag.

Recap from last time -
For those of you who missed out on last nights action, Team Alpha Task Force helped take away the Championship Title from Bravo Company. We had a strong showing of Prospective Members for our Team. I want to thank everyone who took the time to come out and have fun, represent our group, and maybe learn a thing or two. On hand that night for our Team we had…

TATF Member – Aaron aka “Biggs”
          Prospect – Dillon aka “No-Lid”
          Prospect – Vincent aka “Milkweed”
          Prospect – David aka “Cowboy”
          Prospect – Brandon aka “Tiny”
          Prospect – Shane aka “Sledgehammer”

Also Shane brought along two other of his co-workers, One of which was named Mark and I forgot the others name. Sorry, Both were really great guys, and who knew their shit.

It was great to get back to the “Outdoor” type of games, with a great bunch of guys. I can say this, before the night started the refs already knew TATF arrived.. The first question he was asking is “How many Thunder B’s are you gonna throw tonight?” lol But by the end of the night, the owner was asking… “What was your Team’s name again”… :) He wants us to come back next month, (The first wednesday of every month) to defend our new Champoinship Title there at the park. I know I’m going. Hopefully we can have more of our regular Members there to show the rest of the Prospects how we do this. I will also need to have a talk with our regular Members to take a vote on others that want to join in, as a regular Member. We will have to have you all down there and to eval them on performance, and operations. With all of that being said…

Hollywood Sports was a GREAT place! I personaly liked it WAY BETTER, than Tac City. This place is so far my favorite place to go. We can actually work on some things at this location. I personaly recommend that we participate in the monthly “Wednesday Wars” game. This has it all, and I will be wanting to bring the entire team to this location.

They run the regular games throughout the night, but My favorite games were where they opened up 4 feilds all at once, and we played them out. :) The best however is where they turn off all of the lights in the entire park, and split the people in two groups. Each have a General and an XO with different objectives to collect and/or do. There are 3 respawns of life with medics and squads. This was close to what I have done in the past. But being out there in the 37 degree weather, and total darkness was great! I really think our guys would love this way better than the same old Tac City.

Not that Tac City is not any fun, or is not good. We just need to change up our venue. I think Hollywood Sports is a great alternative for this. However we did run into a few issues. We had fogging issues in this cold weather. We need to find GREAT goggles/mask setups. We also had some gun issues, such as not having enough ammo, and or some of our guns did not fire/work. We need to have everyone with a drop pouch for spent magazines. If we do more of these outdoor games, a Molle system works out so much better. And if we are going to do more of these outdoor maps we need to have warmer gear. It was cold! I Had fun and can’t wait to do this again next month! Thanks Guys! —
